1886-7 153x130cm canvas Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart. This is from the Perseus series commissioned by Arthur Balfour for the music room of his London house at 4 Carlton Gardens. Like so many of Burne-Jones’s picture, the story comes from the EArthly Paradise by William Morris. It tells how Perseus kills the Medusa and rescues Andromeda. In this picture Perseus shows Andromeda the head of the Medusa reflected in a well. The Perseus series is biggest and most ambitious cycle of pictures. Only four were completed and another four survive only as large cartoons. Romanticism, Mannerism Southampton City Art Galery
