As half of the world leaves summer behind, the other half gets itself ready for sunshine, warmth and happiness. This of course leads to beaches, swimming, sunning and fun times at the beach. No wonder we all start singing “Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside
I do like to be beside the sea!”

I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll along the Prom, Prom, Prom!
Where the brass bands play:
“Tiddely-om-pom-pom!”
So just let me be beside the seaside
I’ll be beside myself with glee
And there’s lots of girls beside,

Beside the sea!”

Here we have two artists who have captured the “on the beach” moment with the ever-present deck chairs.

Featured above we have the (oil on canvas 101cm x 136.5cm) blue and white stripe deck chairs with white dove as painted by Graeme Roche (1944-1995).  Born in Melbourne, Roche was mostly a self-taught painter. Little is known about him, however, we do know that he travelled to the UK, Europe and USA in 1981.

If you rather prefer red and white, to blue and white stripe deck chairs, you might consider this painting by a fellow Australian artist Lesley Hunter from country Victoria –  entitled  “Last Night at the Proms” which depicts the scene where ‘beach-side’ deck chairs are laid out in Hyde Park, London in front of large TV screens, streaming the live performance, of “The Last Night at the Proms” concert for the enjoyment of ‘music officiandos’ who wish to partake in this most festive British music festival, regardless of the ‘full-house’ subscriber seating within the the Royal Albert Hall on its last night where the combined orchestra and audience ‘whoop it up” and sing to their glory to great British anthems such as:

Rule Britannia (Arne)
Land of Hope and Glory (from Pomp & Circumstance – Elgar)
Jerusalem  (Parry) and
God Save the Queen (National Anthem).

What a way to celebrate!  Let’s deck the lawns with striped chairs a folly!
