Viktor Magyar was born on April 1, 1934 in Metlika, Yugoslavia. As a child he spent hours drawing and working in clay. He decided early that he wanted to be an artist and attended the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts for a single semester. After that, he became a school-teacher. In 1961, whilst teaching in a little town called Crna, he became friends with Gerhard Ledic a roving reporter for the Zagreb newspaper Vjesnik and an authority on the Hlebine School of Yugoslav naïve artists.
His talent was quickly recognized and he began to spend more time on his painting. He held his first exhibition in Strajne in 1961. Since then he as held many one-man and collective shows in Trieste, Dusseldorf, Paris, Milan, Frankfurt, London, Philadelphia, New York, St. Moritz, Washington, DC; Melbourne, Chicago etc.
